FLU or COLD – - A Chinese herbal prescription.
A flu or cold usually goes away in a few days if you rest enough and drink a lot of water. However, the herbal prescription will help you recover faster, especially if you have a stubborn cough. It also reduces all the discomforts of the flu while you are recovering.
For elders, kids, or those who are weak, don’t wait for the flu to go away by itself. Take the herbs to end the flu sooner and prevent it from degenerating into something serious like bronchitis or pneumonia.
The prescription should be written according to what kind of symptoms the patient has, and the severity of those symptoms:
1) Fever or high temperature
Lian Qiao
Huang Qin
Zhi Zi
Di Gu Pi
2) Cough, phlegm and nasal congestion
Chuan Bei Mu
Sang Bai Pi
Qing Pi
Zi Su Ye
Pi Pa Ye
3) Indigestion requiring mild purging
Zhi Shi
Fan Xie Ye
4) Weak respiratory system (depending on the patient)
Bai Bu
Zi Wan
A combination of 13 herbs are recommended.
There are other symptoms requiring no treatment, because they will go away automatically when the flu is reduced, e.g. tiredness, aches and pains, or lack of appetite. These symptoms are your body’s natural reaction to the flu. It would be a mistake if herbs are prescribed to lessen those symptoms. Why? Those symptoms all require strengthening herbs which are “hot” in nature. The herbs you use for the flu have to be “cold” in nature. Thus you would create a conflict in your prescription. This conflict would result in lessening the overall effect of the herb package, and even worse, prolonging the flu. If those symptoms still remain after the flu is gone, something else is wrong and should be treated from a different angle by strengthening the body.
Drink one to two cups (8 oz each) of herb tea a day.
Chinese herbs are very effective in reducing the various discomforts of the flu and shortening its hold on you.
Most flu patients need less than five days of herbs to completely recover.
While you recover from the flu, remember to rest, drink more water, eat light meals, and avoid greasy, peppery, deep-fried and barbecued food.
This is just one formula with countless variations depending on:
* Severity and nature of the symptoms based on observation and discussion of the problem with the herbalist.
* How weak is your body and how much herbs you need to help you fight the flu.

ANXIETY and STRESS – - A Chinese herbal prescription
As you know, anxiety is a complicated condition brought on by various problems of life. It would be nice if I could write a prescription to make all your problems go away. However, you know that I don’t have that kind of power, especially in financial matters, personal relationships, job security, or business dealings.
Nevertheless, I can help you reduce the physical stress that anxiety brings. Anxiety throws your body out of balance. As a result, various physical problems tend to surface and resurface, such as indigestion, overeating, sleep difficulty, migraines, skin rash, burst of temper, energy drain, etc.
The prescription should help your body achieve the balance that has been lost. How? Balance is a delicate thing. You can only restore it by gently nourishing the major organs back to their normal conditions. When they become stronger, they will be able to find their own way to balance without you having to tell them how. As a result, you will feel much better overall. The Chinese approach to anxiety is to nourish, moisten, and soothe. The word is , pronounced as “ren”, for which I cannot find an English word similar in meaning.
The prescription should basically be a combination of gentle nourishing for all major organs and the Yin.
1) Liver
Bai Shao
Gou Qi Zi
2) Lungs
Bai He
Jie Gen
3) Heart
Zao Ren
Wu Wei Zi
4) Stomach
Bai Zhu
Dang Shen
5) Kidneys
Qian Shi
Jin Qian Cao
6) The Yin
Mai Men Dong
Fu Ling
Sheng Di Huang
A combination of 13 herbs are recommended.
One must be careful not to prescribe strong herbs for fast results. The consequence may be negative. When stronger herbs are used, they generate heat inside the body. Excess heat may make the anxiety worse.
Drink one cup (8 oz) of herb tea a day, preferably in the morning to allow time for dissipation of excess heat and the balancing to work.
This is just one formula with countless variations depending on:
* Your changing condition.
* How weak is your body and where is the weakness.
* How sensitive is your body to the strengthening herbs.

NATURAL HEALING with Chinese Herbs
Chinese herbs do not grow in China only. If you find the right climate and soil type, you can grow many of those herbs overseas. For instance, American Ginseng is grown in Wisconsin State.
The raw herbs available in retail have the following natural features:
* Part of a plant: root, leave, seed, flowers, branch, etc.
* Unprocessed except being cut, sliced, and cleansed of dirt.
* Dried because the dried form weighs less and can be stored longer.
* Some herbs can be eaten after boiling because they turn soft.
* Most herbs cannot be eaten for they remain very coarse after boiling.
* Herbs in general don’t taste good. Most taste bitter and earthly. Some taste neutral. A few taste even sweet.
* Inexpensive except for a few like Ren Shen , Chuan Bei Mu , or Dong Qong Xia Cao .
How do people take the raw herbs?
a) Raw herbs are usually taken orally by extracting the essence out of them. The natural way being practiced since ancient time is to boil and brew the herbal package in water to get a dark brown solution called herb tea that never tastes good. One hour of brewing should be good enough. Then you drink one or two cups a day. Honey or sugar may be added to make it taste less bad. The herbal package can be conveniently modified by changing some ingredients to make it work for you. So an herbal package is really tailor-made for you only.
b) Raw herbs can be made into tablet forms by companies and sold as herbal formulas. Although convenient to swallow, tablets cannot be tailor-made for you. Like Western drugs, they are mass-produced for everybody in the world with similar health problems. When an herbal tablet you bought does not work for you, you just have to toss it and buy another one.
c) Raw herbs can be made into capsules at home. All you need is a tailor-made package of raw herbs. Turn it into fine powder with a powerful grinder, and put the powder into empty gel capsules. When you swallow the capsules, your digestive system has to extract the essence out of the raw herb powder. Whereas if you drink the herb tea, the essence extraction is already done after brewing. The herbal solution will readily be absorbed by your body. Furthermore, the herb tea has a history spanning over two thousand years. How many years of history does the tablet or capsule have besides offering convenience?
What are the healing properties?
* Herbs have natural healing effects on organs, blood, and various unhealthy conditions.
* In contrast to Western pharmaceuticals, which are mainly designed to fix or suppress certain health conditions, herbs have additional enhancing and strengthening values on the body.
* Due to their strengthening and enhancing values, herbs can also be used for preventive measures.
* The herbal effects are natural and mild, with little adverse side effects.
* Each herb has multiple effects on the body, in addition to one major effect.
* Herbs don’t work singly because the effects of one herb are too gentle.
* The effects of herbs rely on synergies because of their overlapping multiple effects. Therefore, an herbal package of different herbs put together can deliver a much greater effect than a single herb of equal weight.
* How to create synergy for an herbal package is an essential knowledge and experience that distinguish a good herbalist from a mediocre one.

JOINT PAINS – - A Chinese herbal prescription.
Everybody has suffered from joint pains one time or another except those at very young age.
Causes of joint pains:
Age will definitely worsen your joint pains.

Overexposure to cold, wind and damp such as insufficient clothing to protect the body against the elements.
Not enough rest due to work, travel, and other activities.

A previous joint injury may result in periodic pains after recovery.
Flu or cold can cause temporary aches and pains, which will disappear when the flu passes.
Nature of joint pains:
Long-term condition subject to occasional flare-ups triggered by the causes described above.
Aging causes more pains, possibly deformation of joints too.
Joint pains accompanied by swelling are more serious.
Very difficult to cure joint pains completely. Expect only improvements in the following areas: intensity of pains, duration, degree of swelling if any, and the frequency of flare-ups.
A certain degree of tiredness always accompanies the pains.
Painkillers or numbing with ice can only reduce the pains but cannot get to the roots of the problem.
External treatment:
Gentle and slow exercise such as Tai Chi, Yoga, or swimming.
Heat treatment with pad or lamp.
Massage by people or machine.
Acupuncture.
* Various oitments with different ingredients.
Internal treatment:
The Chinese approach is to enhance the blood circulation with herbs. The Chinese name for joint pains is , literally translated as “wind damp disease”. This is related to the observation that joint pains become more acute in windy and damp weather conditions. The herbs used to enhance blood circulation will flush out the wind and damp, as well as cold absorbed by the body from the environment. Improved blood circulation also helps reduce swelling. The effects will last much longer than external treatment since the herbs also strengthen the bones and tendons.
The basic prescription for joint pains is focused on strengthening blood circulation, bones and tendons. It also tries to expel the environmental factors being absorbed into the body such as wind, damp and cold:
1) Blood circulation
Sang Ji Sheng
Gui Zhi
Du Huo
u Jia Pi
2) Bones and tendons
San Qi
Niu Xi
Gu Sui Bu
Bu Gu Zhi
3) Expel wind/damp/cold
Jiang Huo
Fang Feng
Bi Xie
Ze Xie
A combination of 12 herbs is recommended.
Drink one cup (8 oz) of herb tea a day, preferably in the morning to allow time for dissipation of excess heat.
This is just one formula with countless variations depending on:
* How acute is the pain and where.
* Any swelling and where.
* How sensitive is your body to the strengthening herbs.
